Welfare Aid Program
A. Death Benefits – Ninety (90) days grace period upon disembarkation. Cover death of a member (regardless of length of membership); death of a member’s spouse (after one year of contribution of a covered member); and death of a member’s children, unemancipated 18 years old and below and not to exceed four and after two years of continued contribution. B. Funeral AssistanceFor spouse and minor children and not to exceed four (4) C.Disability Benefits - Ninety (90) days grace period upon disembarkation. Members in good standing who suffer from physical injury (i.e. loss of limbs, hands or all fingers or 3 thumbs, both feet, both eyes, or when permanently bedridden as a result of injuries) by reason of or in the occasion of their work are entitled to dis-ability assistance. The payment of disability assistance will be given in full immediately after the filing, verification and approval of claims. D.Hospitalization (Assistance) Benefits - Ninety (90) days grace period upon disembarkation. Cover hospitalized member; hospitalized spouse; hospitalized children, unemancipated 18 years old and below. Out-patients are not included in this program. The reimbursement of hospitalization assistance will be given in full immediately after the filing, verification and approval of claims. The assistance is non-cumulative.
Family Medical and Dental Benefits
Covered by these are the members, their legitimate spouses and children (up to four and unemancipated) and parents, if the member is single.

X-Ray Services• For the desired X-ray procedure needed by patient 6. Electro-CardiogramWith interpretation of cardiologist. 8. Referral CasesThe Union physician attends to referrals.
Savings and Loans
A member who has paid a membership fee of US$2.00 and with a minimum fixed deposit ofUS$20 or P1.000, whichever is higher, becomes a member of the Savings and Loan of the Associated Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Inc. (AMCI) and shall have a savings account with the said cooperative which can be withdrawn anytime. All transactions with regards to his savings are entered into a passbook. All AMCI members are encouraged to save at least US$2/month within the period of engagement onboard a vessel. This little amount will go a long way in helping them in their hour of need.
A member in good standing can apply for a loan subject to certain conditions. Payment of said loan shall not exceed 12 months or as decided by the Board.
Trade Union Information and Education Program
The Union provides continuing education to members through seminars, teach-ins, information materials, and other means to inform members on the value of trade unionism, rights of seafarers, and current issues affecting them and the workers in general. The PSU also holds seminars for the seafarers’ spouses.
Collective Bargaining
Since January 1994, all agreements negotiated by the PSU on behalf of its members conform with the standards set by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) and are recognized by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration(POEA). Fraternal organizations worldwide also assist in ensuring that these agreements are strictly implemented to protect the rights and interests of Union members.
Legal Assistance
he PSU has lawyers working fulltime for the Union. PSU lawyers are always ready to answer the needs of Union members not only in Metro Manila, but also in the provinces, e.g., Cebu (in Central Visayas),Cagayan de Oro (in Northern Mindanao),Davao City (in Southern Mindanao), and in Ormoc, Leyte (in Eastern Visayas).
Retirement and Provident Program
Not all vessels covered by the PSU agreements are participating in the Union’s retirement / provident program. For those vessels, however, which are participating in theprogram, the crew on board are assured of the safety of all contributions credited to them plus their share of the net income credited thereto. The ship owners, likewise, are represented in the management of the program to assure that its objectives are fulfilled and all its transactions are carried out above board.
Spiritual Services
The Union’s Spiritual Center (or St. Joseph the Worker Chapel) is located in the port area of Cebu City. The Center holds regular holy masses, baptism, weddings and other religious rites. The Union has a chaplain who oversees its spiritual services, including counselling.
Radio Broadcasting Stations
In cooperation with the other affiliates and industry unions within the umbrella of the Associated Labor Union (ALU), two radio broadcasting stations were established in Cebu City: Radio DYLA(AM), 909 kHz and DYWF (Smash FM), 93.1 mHz. Radio DYLA has been popularly known and accepted as “The Voiceof Labor”. It is through this radio broadcasting station that the PSU and the ALU popularize the principles of free and democratic trade unionism. Radio DYLA is one of the major radio broadcasting stations in Central Philippines.

Pertinent papers required for filing hospitalization assistance
When filing hospitalization assistance, the Member or the beneficiary concerned must present the following supporting papers:
A. Hospitalization of a Member • Employment certificate • Doctor’s certificate • Hospital’s official receipts and statement of accounts
B. Hospitalization of Member’s Legitimate Spouse • Employment certificate of a member • Doctor’s certificate • Marriage contract • Hospital’s official receipts and statement of accounts
C.Hospitalization of a Child • Employment certificate of a member • Doctor’s certificate • Marriage contract of the parents • Birth certificate of the child • Hospital’s official receipts and statement of accounts
D. If the birth certificate or marriage contract is not available due to destruction of records, the baptismal certificate or a certification by the parish priest of the record of entries of the marriage as appearing in the marriage register of the church or the municipality, as the case maybe, must be had. If none of the papers mentioned in the preceding paragraph are available, a certification of loss from the local civil register must be had, in which case, an affidavit executed by a disinterested party who knows the fact of birth or marriage in lieu of the birth certificate or marriage contract, as the case maybe, must be had.
