20 Filipino seafarers at frontlines of international search for MH 370
MANILA – Twenty Filipino seafarers in a foreign ship are among those looking for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said Wednesday.
"We are heartened that our overseas Filipino seafarers are contributing to the international effort to locate the missing Malaysian Airlines flight 370," she said in a news release.
Maritime Labor Convention 2006 of International Labor Organization in force
The Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) 2006 came into force on August 20, 2013, to ensure the protection and welfare of 1.2 million seafarers of the world, including the 400,000 Filipino workers in international and domestic shipping. Adopted during the 94th International Labor Organization (ILO) Convention in Geneva, Switzerland, on February 7, 2006, MLC 2006 is an international agreement under which countries and territories of the world, including employers, will observe, protect, and promote the standards of seafarers’ working condition.

Maritime union leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region will chart out the future of a proposed regional maritime federation in a high level meeting convening on November 13 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
The leaders represent key maritime unions in the region: the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ), and Papua New Guinea Maritime and Transport Workers Union (PNGMTU).
ILO Meeting of Experts Adopts Guidelines on the Training of Ships’ Cooks
The new guidelines aim to provide guidance to Member States to help them implement Regulation 3.2 and the respective provisions of the Code of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) concerning food and catering, and in particular the qualification and training standards for ships’ cooks.
